Renewed for a Second Season: Japanese Psychothriller ‘Gannibal’

After a gripping first season that left viewers hanging on a nail-biting cliffhanger, Yuya Yagira, Show Kasamatsu, and Riho Yoshioka reprise their roles for the thrilling and eagerly anticipated finale of this must-watch tale

Following an exhilarating first season that propelled Yuya Yagira into the spotlight, earning him a Best Actor nomination at the upcoming Busan International Film Festival’s Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards, and establishing the show as Japan’s most-watched locally produced original series on Disney+ within a month of its debut (measured by hours streamed), “Gannibal” is set to make its highly anticipated return for a second season, exclusively on Disney+.

This new season will once again feature the stellar cast, including Yuya Yagira as police officer Daigo Agawa, Show Kasamatsu as Keisuke Goto, the head of the enigmatic Goto family, and Riho Yoshioka as Yuki Agawa, Daigo’s unwavering and supportive wife. Additionally, season two will see the reunion of screenwriter and Academy Award-nominee Takamasa Oe, director Shinzo Katayama, and producer Teruhisa Yamamoto, who was also the producer behind the 2022 Academy Award-winning film “Drive My Car.”

Set in a fictitious Japanese village, the first season of “Gannibal” introduced viewers to the emotionally shattered police officer Daigo Agawa, who had relocated to his new residence. Wrestling with guilt over a traumatic event involving his daughter, Daigo’s fresh start took an ominous turn as a series of disturbing incidents led him to the chilling realization that something was deeply amiss with the villagers and the enigmatic Goto family. Season one took the audience on an intense emotional rollercoaster, culminating in a heart-pounding cliffhanger.

In the upcoming season two, viewers will delve deeper into the village’s unsettling mysteries and join Daigo in his quest to unravel the impossible and bring the sinister Goto family to justice.
