Mama Sita’s Food Stories Unveils Annual Holiday Edition: “Filipino Christmas Feasts”

The annual storytelling competition, Mga Kuwentong Pagkain (MKP), introduced by the Mama Sita Foundation in 2012, commemorates its 11th year with a focus on the vibrant tapestry of festive Filipino cuisine.

Named “Pamaskong Pagkaing Pilipino,” this year’s contest aims to illuminate Filipino holiday recipes and cherished traditions that weave together the bonds among family and friends.

The essay writing competition invites individuals worldwide to partake and share their holiday-themed Filipino culinary tales. Entries may encompass treasured heirloom recipes and their narratives, shining a light on family or community customs. Essays might also infuse an intriguing perspective on a specific ingredient or crop widely utilized in the region, or pay homage to those who bring food to our tables — from the diligent farmers cultivating them to the home cooks crafting delightful meals.

While the essay writing contest allows for a wide array of subjects, settings, and focal points, the essence of MKP remains constant — celebrating the potency of Filipino food to nurture relationships and transcend barriers.

Submissions must not exceed 1,000 words in either English or Filipino and should be sent in .pdf format via email (hello.mkp2023@gmail.com) or through this link (https://bit.ly/MKPForm2023).

Judging criteria comprise: 40% Cultural Significance, evaluating the entry’s portrayal of cultural elements in Philippine Christmas celebrations or holiday traditions tied to Filipino cuisine; 20% Narrative Effectiveness, assessing storytelling clarity and pace; 20% Theme Relevance, seeking alignment with the initiative’s overarching theme of uniting through Filipino food; and the remaining 20% for Creativity and Originality, spotlighting uniqueness in storytelling approach, style, and technique. Cash prizes and gift items from the Mama Sita Foundation await this year’s victors.

Submission deadline is on January 25, 2024. For detailed information, refer to the Rules & Mechanics and Legal Guidelines.

Stay updated on the official MKP Facebook and Instagram pages and the Mama Sita Foundation’s website for further announcements.

The MKP endeavor draws inspiration from Filipino culinary icon Teresita “Mama Sita” Reyes, a champion dedicated to promoting Philippine cuisine worldwide. She believed fervently in Filipino food’s ability to fortify familial bonds, nurture friendships, and bridge cultures. MKP stands as a tribute to her passion for food, people, and her unparalleled commitment to thrust Philippine cuisine onto the global culinary stage.
