“Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” Brings Rey Valera’s Music and Story to Life on the Big Screen

The Summer Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has just gotten a new addition in the form of “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” (The Music of Rey Valera). This movie is not just about the iconic hits of the country’s famous composer and singer Rey Valera. It’s also a journey into his life, his career, and what inspired him to create some of the best-known Original Pilipino Music (OPM) chartbusters of all time.

The film showcases Rey Valera’s journey as he selected ten of his OPM Blockbusters such as “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko,” “Malayo Pa ang Umaga,” “Ako Si Superman,” “Pangako Sa’Yo,” “Mr.DJ,” “Maging Sino Ka Man,” “Tayong Dalawa,” “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo,” and “Kung Kailangan Mo Ako.”

The movie weaves a tapestry of the human condition, featuring collages of some of the people he encountered in his life and reflections on the stories that characterize the Filipino identity.

Rey Valera’s life and career are portrayed in different segments that pay tribute to his top hits. In the film, there are also tributes to the start of the journey of Sharon Cuneta and the late Rico J Puno. Ramon Khino “RK” Bagatsing plays the character of Rey Valera, along with a star-studded cast that includes Aljur Abrenica, Ricco Barrera, Gelli de Belen, Josh de Guzman, Christopher de Leon, Jenine Desiderio, Meg Imperial, Ronnie Lazaro, Gian Magdanggal, Carlo Mendoza, Ara Mina, Arlene Muhlach, Pekto Nascua, Eric Nicolas, Dennis Padilla, Epy Quizon, Arman Reyes, Ariel Rivera, Ricky Rivero, Rosanna Roces, Lloyd Sarmartino, Shira Tweg, Lou Veloso, and Gardo Versoza.

The cast does a phenomenal job of bringing the characters to life and portraying Rey Valera’s inspiration for writing various songs based on his observations of others’ lives.

Rey himself said that the film was executed as he imagined, and this is largely due to the director of the film, Direk Joven Tan, who is also a music composer. This film is the first musical movie that’s very subtle and deep yet a piece of cake to understand.

Even though the young generation may not be familiar with Rey Valera as a famous singer and composer, they can still appreciate the songs that he has composed.

Rey’s iconic works are still performed by artists and used in different movies and teleseryes in the industry. “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” is a movie that showcases the enduring quality of his music and how it continues to inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers.

“Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” is produced by Saranggola Media and directed by Direk Joven Tan. The movie will be shown on April 8th, 2023. It’s a highly recommended movie, especially for those who aspire to be in the music industry.

The movie brings you the motivation to strive and pursue the dreams you aim for, just like Rey Valera did in his life and career.
