Journey through Ancient Babylon: Verdi’s Nabucco at CCP – The Met: Live in HD

Embark on a journey to Ancient Babylon with Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, making its Philippine debut at CCP The Met: Live in HD on April 2nd, 5:30 pm, exclusively at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 1 in Makati City.

Verdi’s third opera unfolds a gripping tale of the ancient Jerusalem’s downfall under Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco) and the subsequent exile of the Hebrews in Babylon.

The opera’s inception is as captivating as its storyline. Following personal tragedies and critical setbacks, Verdi contemplated quitting composition until he encountered Solera’s libretto, reigniting his passion and setting the stage for an opera that would define his legacy.

Premiering at Teatro alla Scala, Milan in 1842, Nabucco enjoyed resounding success while maintaining fidelity to biblical narratives, albeit with some character adaptations by librettist Temistocle Solera.

Renowned baritone George Gagnidze debuts as the formidable King Nabucco, alongside soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska’s riveting portrayal of his vengeful daughter, Abigaille. Mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova and tenor Seok-Jong Baek, in his company debut, embody Fenena and Ismaele, whose love defies political turmoil. Dmitry Belosselskiy reprises his acclaimed role as the high priest Zaccaria.

Under the baton of Daniele Callegari, Verdi’s early masterpiece resonates, featuring the iconic “Va, pensiero,” known as the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.

Decades later, at Verdi’s funeral, Arturo Toscanini led numerous orchestras and choruses across Italy in a rendition of “Va, pensiero,” paying homage to the composer’s enduring legacy.

Experience this monumental Met production helmed by director Elijah Moshinsky. Tickets are priced at Php350, with a special discounted rate of Php100 for students and young professionals upon presentation of ID.
