Instructure Experts Illuminate Data, AI, and EdTech Trends Shaping Future Education

Experts from Instructure, a global edtech firm renowned for the Canvas learning management system, recently shared insights at the CanvasConnect conference in the Philippines regarding emerging trends in education technology. These trends are reshaping the educational landscape in the Philippines, focusing on areas such as data analytics and the utilization of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

CanvasConnect Philippines, held on August 22, 2023, at the Manila Hotel in Ermita, Manila, gathered educators and industry leaders from top universities in the country. The event facilitated discussions on best practices as educational institutions adapt to new approaches and tools that enhance online, hybrid, and traditional face-to-face learning. Instructure’s edtech experts also provided valuable insights into technological advancements and trends shaping the educational landscape for 2023 and beyond.

Melissa Loble, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Instructure, emphasized the post-pandemic shift in institutions towards placing students at the center of learning. Beyond traditional degree programs, students are seeking alternative educational pathways. Many institutions have recognized this shift and now offer non-degree programs and courses that provide credentials or digital badges. This shift allows students to pursue their desired careers or acquire new skills.

Loble also highlighted the growing emphasis on lifelong learning, the increasing importance of data analytics, and efforts by educators worldwide to recreate the classroom experience in virtual environments. She noted, “Even when we’re combining physical and online environments, there is tremendous potential in data to create more personalized learning paths and more effective, just-in-time teaching experiences.”

Ryan Lufkin, Vice President of Global Strategy at Instructure, emphasized the current focus on generative AI like ChatGPT. He encouraged educators and administrators to incorporate digital innovations into their teaching and learning processes, recognizing that students are growing up in a technology-driven world. Learning these tools in the classroom prepares students for a digital future. Lufkin emphasized the importance of training educators and integrating AI tools into the curriculum, suggesting that schools take a more proactive approach to professional development in AI for educators.

Regarding generative AI, Instructure’s approach emphasizes intention, security, and human-driven implementation to promote equitable and impactful learning experiences. Lufkin also stressed the need for comprehensive policies on the ethical use of AI in education, with transparency, fairness, and safety as guiding principles.

Lufkin recommended a shift in how institutions measure learning, urging clarity in the purpose behind course activities to prevent the misuse of AI tools as shortcuts. He underscored the importance of teaching critical thinking, especially as tools like ChatGPT may not always provide proper source citations.

The conference showcased beta and future technologies that will be integrated into Canvas LMS and other products in the Instructure Learning Platform. These innovations include enhancements to learning and admin analytics, bulk publishing and unpublishing modules, flexible displays, AI-assisted course templating, beta AI-powered answer rationales, and the integration of AI writing tutor Khanmigo through a partnership with Khan Academy. Speakers highlighted how these innovations will enhance personalized learning experiences, collaboration, accessibility, engagement, and productivity for educators and students alike.

Harrison Kelly, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific at Instructure, emphasized the vital role of educational technology in providing educators with data-driven insights and inspiring students to envision a brighter future aligned with the rapidly changing global landscape. He noted, “As the Philippine educational landscape transforms, it’s clear that with the right educational tools and commitment, together we can pave the way for limitless possibilities.”
