Instituto Cervantes Pays Tribute to Spanish Film Icon Juan Mariné through Online Series

In February 2024, Instituto Cervantes is set to present an online film series titled ‘Juan Mariné, Goya de Honor’ to honor the substantial contributions of Juan Mariné Bruguera to Spanish Cinema. These films will be accessible for streaming on the Instituto Cervantes channel on Vimeo (vimeo.com/institutocervantes) and will be freely available for a duration of four days (96 hours) from their start date and time, ending when supplies are exhausted.

Juan Mariné Bruguera, a cinematographer and film inventor born on December 13, 1920, has devoted over eighty years to cinema, leaving an indelible mark on Spanish cultural imagery through his works. Mariné’s dedication to film conservation and restoration underscores the pivotal role of light in the history of Spanish cinema.

The series will showcase four feature films personally selected by Juan Mariné, emphasizing the visual aesthetics embedded in the films’ shots. The overarching themes include the use of light and cinematography to create compelling imagery. The first two films utilize black and white imagery to accentuate visual aesthetics, while the latter two employ cinematic imagery to make supernatural spaces credible within fictional genres (Link to the movie: https://vimeo.com/885656984).

On February 16, the third film, ‘El astronauta’ (1970), takes viewers on a comedic journey parodying the moon landing craze of the late 60s. A group of friends in Southern Spain builds a space prototype after convincing themselves that they can start the Spanish space race. The film can be viewed (Link to the film: https://vimeo.com/885757463).

Concluding the series on February 23 with ‘La grieta’ (1991), the film ventures into science fiction and horror cinema as Mariné collaborates with director Juan Piquer. Set within a submarine deep in the Dannekin rift, the story unfolds as a NATO mission seeks to rescue a lost submarine, encountering strange mutations in the creatures inhabiting the depths. The film is accessible (Link to the film: https://vimeo.com/885643948).

Presented by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, the online film series will be in Spanish with English subtitles. Viewing is free starting February 2, 2024.
