Experience a 17th-Century Witch Hunt in CCP NTL’s Production of “The Crucible”

Continuing from its 2023 lineup, the CCP National Theatre Live kicks off the new year with a screening of American playwright Arthur Miller’s haunting play, “The Crucible,” on January 30, 2024, at 6 PM, hosted at Ayala Malls Cinemas Greenbelt 3 Cinema 1.

Set in the Puritan New England town of Salem, Massachusetts, “The Crucible” unfolds a gripping narrative of power, delving into the historical events leading to the notorious 1692 witch trials. This story served as the inspiration for Tanghalang Pilipino’s acclaimed play, “Ang Pag-uusig.”

Directed by renowned West End director Lyndsey Turner and designed by Tony Award-winner Es Devlin, the play revolves around a group of young women in Salem accused of practicing witchcraft. As fear, vendetta, and accusations sweep through the community, no one is immune to the impending trials.

Based on real people and events, this thrilling drama exploring the Puritan witchcraft purge in old Salem delves into themes of history, community, herd mentality, and truth. Erin Doherty, recognized for her role as the young Princess Anne in seasons three and four of “The Crown,” stars alongside Australian actor, screenwriter, and director Brendan Cowell in this contemporary staging.

Launched in June 2009, the National Theatre Live project broadcasts the best of British theater live from the London stage to cinemas worldwide, including the Philippines. CCP National Theatre Live brings these world-class stage plays, filmed in high definition, to local cinemas, offering audiences the magic of London’s National Theatre.

President Michelle Nikki Junia expressed, “In 2024, we continue to bring new and exciting artistic and cultural experiences to all Filipino people. Through CCP NTL and other CCP programs, we aim to encourage art appreciation and participation in live theater.”
