This special screening, open to the public and free of charge, commemorates the centennial birth anniversary of Romero, a revered figure in Philippine cinema. As a film director, producer, and screenwriter, Romero’s work has explored the nation’s history and politics. His portfolio includes acclaimed films like “Ganito Kami Noon…Paano Kayo Ngayon?,” “Kamakalawa,” and “Banta ng Kahapon,” as well as critically acclaimed war films from the 1960s.

“Aguila,” released in 1980, is a period drama that delves into the Philippines’ history through the life story of Daniel Aguila. The film follows the Aguila family as they gather to celebrate Daniel’s 88th birthday, only to discover that he has been missing for a decade. One of his sons embarks on a journey to Mindanao in search of his father, uncovering memories that intertwine personal and historical narratives over 80 tumultuous years.

Themes of family, history, society, and nationalism resonate throughout “Aguila,” which is hailed as a monumental achievement in Philippine cinema. The film clinched six wins at the 1981 FAMAS Awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay, and received nine nominations at the 1981 Gawad Urian Awards.

Launched in 2023, CCP Cine Icons is a special initiative by the CCP Film, Broadcast, and New Media Division-Production and Exhibition Department (FBNMD-PED), dedicated to honoring and promoting the works of National Artists and Gawad CCP Para sa Sining awardees.
