Attuned to Mindanao: Morobeats Drops ‘Kendeng,’ Hip-Hop Single Spotify

Morobeats, the hip-hop collective hailing from Mindanao, is leaving its indelible mark on the global music scene with its latest Spotify Single, “Kendeng.” This original track stands as the second installment of the three pioneering Filipino hip-hop Spotify Singles, all part of the KALYE X initiative. KALYE X, an endeavor by Spotify dedicated to nurturing collaborations between artists, fans, and the community, is bestowing well-deserved recognition upon Pinoy hip-hop.

Founded and led by DJ Medmessiah, Morobeats takes immense pride in representing Zamboanga and the wider Mindanao region. Since its inception in 2014, the group has become a prominent fixture in the Pinoy hip-hop landscape. Their roster features a multitude of gifted artists, including Miss A, Tha Wizard, Dizzy D of H20 Klann, Prophecee, Malik, Teemo, Naus, Fateeha, JMara, and many more.

DJ Medmessiah shares his excitement for this groundbreaking milestone, stating, “We are thrilled and honored that the rest of the world will now get to experience ‘Kendeng.’ We’ve been dedicated to using our music and talent to showcase the vibrant Mindanaoan culture and share our unique brand of hip-hop, and this collaboration with Spotify is granting us that very opportunity.”

Kossy Ng, Spotify Asia’s Head of Music, expresses the platform’s commitment to amplifying these artists’ voices and celebrating their extraordinary talent and the stories of Mindanao through hip-hop. “Our goal is to empower these performers to express themselves freely, engage with their fans in fresh ways, and connect with new listeners,” says Ng.

Miss A underlines the importance of representation and the value of hard work in their artistic journey, stating, “As a female hip-hop artist from Mindanao, I am delighted and honored to be able to pursue my deep passion. Hopefully, this endeavor inspires more individuals to continually refine their talents, continue creating music, and make their voices heard.”

Morobeats’ song ‘Kendeng’ epitomizes this sentiment. It reflects the group’s unwavering passion for hip-hop and the members’ boundless energy and determination in pursuing their dreams, inspiring listeners to stay resolute in their own endeavors.

Davao joins the KALYE X street party!

Following the successful start in Cebu, Spotify once again collaborated with Wish 107.5 to bring the second installment of the Spotify KALYE X concert series to Davao City’s Davao Global Township! Early in the evening, the audience was treated to Morobeats’ exclusive performance of their latest Spotify Singles track, ‘Kendeng,’ with a select fan meet-and-greet session following shortly after.

The concert also included an exhilarating KALYE City Xypher, featuring a 16-bar challenge hosted by Rekta sa Kalye. Davera and BigMac delivered stellar performances, leading to a thrilling final showdown between the two rappers, ultimately won by BigMac. Additionally, the event showcased the live talents of local street artist Smok from Wadab Locals, who created a graffiti masterpiece right before the audience’s eyes.

Representing Davao-based hip-hop talent, Delinquent Society and Wolbsgvng set the stage ablaze with their electrifying performances, featuring tracks like ‘Yatkape,’ ‘Pipe A Bish,’ and ‘CtrlAltDelete.’ Notably, this marked Delinquent Society’s return to the stage after a three-year hiatus, making the occasion all the more special and unforgettable.
