The latest musical offerings from ATARASHII GAKKO! come on the heels of a tremendously successful year and a promising start to 2024. In January, they introduced “Toryanse,” a contemporary twist on a beloved Japanese nursery rhyme. Last October saw the release of “Tokyo Calling,” a introspective single delving into the mundane realities of life in Tokyo, accompanied by an ominous alarm-like introduction. The song garnered widespread critical acclaim, leading ATARASHII GAKKO! to make their US late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (watch HERE). Demonstrating their distinctive performance style, the group embarked on their first worldwide SEISHUN Tour, selling out venues across the U.S., and captivating audiences at renowned music festivals such as Mexico City’s Corona Capital Festival and 88rising’s Head In The Clouds Music & Arts Festival in New York and Los Angeles. This year, ATARASHII GAKKO! is set to make their inaugural appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, with performances scheduled for Sunday, April 14th and 21st.

ATARASHII GAKKO!—meaning “new school” in Japanese—comprises four young women who challenge conventional notions of girl groups. In contrast to the typical squeaky vocals, synchronized choreography, and overtly cute personas of many J-Pop idol groups, AG! embraces a different approach. Sporting sailor-fuku uniforms reminiscent of 70s and 80s Japanese student fashion, they adamantly reject objectification. Their bold and dynamic dance routines, self-choreographed, blend elements of Japanese butoh dance, heavy metal headbanging, and hip-hop street dancing. Musically, AG! blends modern J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, rap, punk, and dance, defying easy genre classification.
