This September 16, the BGC landmark celebrates its 22nd anniversary.
And if there’s one thing that has remained unchanged through more than two decades, it’s this: Market! Market! has always been the kind of place where you walk in looking for one thing—and walk out having discovered five more.
From Dampa to Destination
Long before BGC became the glass-and-steel skyline it is today, Market! Market! opened its doors with a simple yet unconventional idea: bring together the things Filipinos already loved and put them all under one roof.
Think flowers inspired by Dangwa, gadgets reminiscent of Greenhills, the wonderfully chaotic energy of Divisoria, and the fresh seafood and paluto experience of a favorite dampa—all in one destination.
At the time, the concept may have seemed like a gamble.
But anyone who has spent a Sunday afternoon wandering from the flower stalls to Fiesta Market, before getting distracted by a random find they never knew they needed, understands exactly why it worked.
“The fun is in the finds”—a promise that has been part of Market! Market! since day one—continues to define the mall as it enters its next chapter.
Where Small Dreams Became Big Business
Some of the best Market! Market! stories aren’t really about the mall itself. They’re about the people and businesses that grew alongside it.
Over the past two decades, Fiesta Market has served as a starting point for numerous local vendors—from those arranging fresh-cut flowers for life’s milestones, to merchants bringing regional fruits and delicacies to the city, and shops offering toys and everyday finds.
Longtime staples such as Tina Berin’s Flowershop, Rodem’s Fruits, Pelican Farms, and Edeng’s Toy Center have put down roots at Market! Market! and continued to grow with its community.
And it isn’t only small businesses that found an early home here.
Japan Home Centre opened its very first store at Market! Market! before expanding nationwide, while Metro chose the mall as the location for its first Metro Manila branch.
If anything, Market! Market! has developed quite a track record for spotting promising names early.
The “Market! Market! Theory”
Here’s a piece of mall trivia worth bringing up in your next group chat: BINI, SB19, KATSEYE, and even The 1975 have all performed at Market! Market!—with some taking the stage there before they reached even greater heights.
The pattern didn’t go unnoticed online.
Soon, the so-called “Market! Market! theory” was born: perform at Market! Market!, and maybe, just maybe, something bigger could be waiting around the corner.
Coincidence? Maybe.
Fun to believe in anyway? Absolutely.
22 and Not Slowing Down
So, what comes next for a mall that has essentially grown up alongside its community?
More of the spirit that brought it here in the first place—only with an even longer runway ahead.
Market! Market!’s lease with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) has officially been extended for another 12 years, with fresh investments planned to upgrade the mall and its facilities.
The landmark is also set to become even more connected to the city through the upcoming Metro Manila Subway, with the planned Bonifacio Global Station located within the property.
But growth doesn’t have to mean leaving behind what made Market! Market! special in the first place.
“What I hope we never lose is the feeling of this place. That it is open. Lively. A little unpredictable,” says Meean B. Dy, chairman of Station Square East Commercial Corporation and president and CEO of Ayala Land Inc. “And that there is always room for the next small business, the next artist, the next idea that deserves to be found.”
Twenty-two years in, Market! Market! continues to do what it has always done best: give people, businesses, and ideas a place to be discovered.
And perhaps that is what makes every visit a little different.
You may walk in looking for one thing.
But you never really know what—or who—you’ll find.
