The country’s pioneering independent film festival, Cinemalaya, returns for its 21st edition with the theme “Layag: sa Alon, Hangin, at Unos,” celebrating the courage and resilience of Filipino stories on the big screen. From October 3 to 12, 2025, film enthusiasts can experience 10 full-length films and 10 short films across three major venues: Shangri-La Plaza, Ayala Malls Cinemas, and Gateway Cineplex 18.

Traditionally held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) since its launch in 2005, Cinemalaya finds new stages this year as CCP continues its rehabilitation. The move underscores the festival’s unwavering mission: to discover, nurture, and showcase the works of both emerging and seasoned Filipino filmmakers who bravely articulate the Philippine experience with artistry and authenticity.

This edition marks a milestone with Shangri-La Plaza as the main festival hub for the first time.

“We are excited to serve as a flagship venue for Cinemalaya’s 21st edition as it reflects our commitment to cultivating local film and cultural expression. As part of our Culture in Focus program, this partnership brings fresh and daring stories to our screens,” said Arrianne M. Nadurata, Senior Retail Marketing Manager of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation.

Meanwhile, Ayala Malls Cinemas, a longtime ally of Cinemalaya, continues its over two-decade partnership with CCP.

“Ayala Malls Cinemas is proud to remain a home for Filipino artistry on the big screen. This enduring collaboration reflects our shared dedication to champion visionary voices and celebrate the boundless spirit of local cinema,” said Yvette Roldan, Head of Ancillary Business and the Cinemas.

Adding to the festival’s expansion is Gateway Cineplex 18, joining as a new partner venue.

“As a new venue partner, Gateway Cineplex 18 is honored to amplify the bold voices of independent filmmakers across the country. Hosting these important films is our way of supporting Filipino creativity,” said Irene L. Jose, COO of Uniprom, Inc.

By weaving together these prominent venues, Cinemalaya 21 widens its reach, giving more audiences the chance to immerse themselves in the thriving landscape of Filipino cinema.

For over two decades, Cinemalaya has been a compass and vessel for storytellers—sailing through tales of identity, truth, struggle, and hope. As it continues to navigate the ever-changing tides of Philippine cinema, the festival reaffirms its promise to persist and endure, even amidst the strongest unos.

Catch Cinemalaya 21 from October 3 to 12, 2025 at Shangri-La Plaza, Ayala Malls Cinemas, and Gateway Cineplex 18.
