ABS-CBN Studios held a special screening and media conference for their newest series “Sins of the Father.” The teleserye boasts an ensemble cast including Gerald Anderson, Jessy Mendiola, Shaina Magdayao, John Arcilla, Tirso Cruz III, Lotlot De Leon, Francine Diaz, and Seth Fedelin. “Sins of the Father” serves as the comeback project of Anderson and Mendiola who took short breaks from the showbiz industry. The serye also marks Magdayao’s reunion with director FM Reyes, who directed her first shows in the industry.
“Sins of the Father” is an action drama with crime, mystery, and thriller elements that come together to tell the story of financial scam victims. John Arcilla plays Mike Trinidad, an eloquent financial guru who promises Filipinos that they’ll be wealthy if they invest in his “Yayaman Tayo” fund. Meanwhile, Gerald Anderson takes on the role of Samuel Trinidad, Mike’s estranged son who is forced to reconnect with his father due to his death and involvement in a scam. To start off the conference, Arcilla and De Leon shared about experiences they had with scammers in the 90s, with Arcilla getting scammed by his student through a pyramid scheme and De Leon getting scammed ₱80,000 worth of bangus through a fake manager’s check.
“Lagi kong nire-request sa [ABS-CBN] na ‘pag may proyekto ako ay sana may social awareness,” Anderson shared. “Sins of the Father” tells gripping stories that shed light on the dangers of scamming and social media while delivering impactful family-driven narratives Filipinos have grown to love. “[Gerald’s] concern for the society is not just for showbiz During moments of disasters you can see him saving people. It comes out naturally,” added Direk FM Reyes.
To prepare for the series, Anderson said that he had to learn arnis and Filipino martial arts, as well as key financial terms to settle into his role. The show’s social relevance was what made Anderson choose the series as his comeback project, among the many options he had over the past three years.
“Sins of the Father” is also considered a key comeback project for Jessy Mendiola and Shaina Magdayao due to different reasons. For Magdayao, this reunion project with her debut series director FM Reyes allowed a balance between familiarity and newness, as she played a lawyer for the first time. Meanwhile, Mendiola shared that she felt “baguhan” because it’s been six years since she took a break from the industry to focus on motherhood, and she did not expect to return.
Speaking of newness, the series marks a leveling-up from the FranSeth loveteam between Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin. “Kung magaling [siya], dapat mas gagalingan ko rin,” Fedelin said about their working dynamic they shared. Diaz mentioned that this was their effort in distancing themselves from exclusively teenage roles to embrace a more mature and developed direction. “We’re so much more than kilig and heartbreak,” she said, emphasizing that “Sins of the Father” helped her and Fedelin grow not just as a loveteam but as actors as well.
“Sins of the Father” premieres June 23, 2025 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live (KOL), A2Z, TV5, iWant, and TFC at 9:30 PM.
